UN Watchdog Declares Iran in Breach of Nuclear Accord
This conclusion led the agency’s Board of Governors to pass a resolution officially recognizing the country as failing to meet its international nuclear responsibilities.
In a significant development not seen in two decades, the resolution—brought forward by France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States—asserts that Iran has not adhered to its non-proliferation commitments.
Furthermore, the country has not cooperated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding undisclosed nuclear substances.
The measure, approved by the 35-nation board of the agency, comes at a time of heightened global unease surrounding Iran’s nuclear conduct.
According to diplomatic insiders, 19 member states supported the resolution. In contrast, Russia, China, and Burkina Faso opposed it, while 11 nations chose not to take a definitive stance and abstained from voting.
Highlighting Iran’s "inability" to demonstrate the civilian intent of its nuclear initiatives, the resolution raises the possibility of the matter being brought before the United Nations Security Council.
Iran denounced the IAEA’s decision and declared it would counter the move by constructing a fresh uranium enrichment site.
Earlier in the week, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi voiced "grave concern" about the extent of Iran’s uranium refinement.
He cautioned that the existing reserves are alarmingly near the threshold required to create a nuclear weapon.
