(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday in Munich, where they explored initiatives to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict and enhance cooperation between their nations, according to the US State Department.

The discussion occurred alongside the Munich Security Conference.

During the meeting, Rubio and Merz talked about “pressing global challenges,” including securing supply chains, promoting efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, and strengthening the US-Europe partnership, stated the US State Department.

Rubio acknowledged Germany’s backing of Ukraine, highlighting that Berlin has delivered more than $76 billion in aid since 2022. The leaders also considered ongoing collaboration on Ukraine’s reconstruction, the State Department added.

A German government official mentioned that Ukraine’s situation and the progress of negotiations with Russia were central topics, along with sustained military support for Kyiv, "particularly military aid."

Additionally, the discussion covered NATO and Europe’s role within the alliance, with Rubio praising Germany’s contributions to bolstering it.
