Diesel Express Supports Army Operations Between Poland and Germany
POWIDZ, Poland — U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 1st General Support Aviation Battalion, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, conducted Diesel Express flight operations between Forward Operating Site Powidz, Poland, and Illesheim Army Airfield, Germany, Oct. 6-7, 2026.
Diesel Express is a weekly CH-47 Chinook flight route that transports Soldiers and equipment between the two locations, providing a means of moving personnel and supplies in support of ongoing operations.
For U.S. Army Spc. Wyatt Gough, a signal operations support specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, the flight provided an opportunity to complete an equipment maintenance requirement.
“I was chosen by my NCO to bring some equipment to have it updated in Illesheim,” Gough said.
Gough works with military radio systems, ensuring they receive the appropriate cryptographic keys and remain operational. The equipment updates help maintain communications capabilities needed during training and operational missions.
Gough emphasized the importance of having “the correct firmware and software to ultimately support the warfighting mission.”
Before departure, CH-47 Chinook pilots Chief Warrant Officer 3 Eric Taylor and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jeffrey Robson conducted pre-flight checks, while crew chiefs Staff Sgt. Fabian Matrienz and Sgt. Nathan Bearden supported flight operations.
Throughout the mission, Soldiers boarded and disembarked the aircraft, transported equipment and completed tasks at their destination before continuing the route.
By connecting personnel and equipment across locations, Diesel Express provides transportation that allows Soldiers like Gough to complete mission requirements while supporting the operational readiness of the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade.
